Many people come into the store and ask how do I do a proper cleansing of my house or myself. I always try to give them a brief explanation of how to cleanse their area, without going into some long and drawn out explanation. So I decided to go searching for a good article that might explain the practice of cleansing/smudging a little more in depth.
I came across this article in Spirituality and Health online. This article titled "The Ancient Art of Smudging". Here is a brief amount from the article.
"To practice smudging at home, it’s important to be respectful and learn how to handle the herbs according to traditional protocols, says Cat Criger, aboriginal elder-in-residence at the University of Toronto. When done properly, smudging can be a way to connect with Native American culture, he notes."
"Before you begin, open a window or door. Place the herbs in an abalone shell, or a clay bowl, and light them with a wooden match. Then gently blow out the flame, letting the material continue to smolder."
I thought this was a great article for everyone to read whether you are new at smudging or just need a refresher. For the full article go to "The Ancient Art of Smudging"
